A tapestry of playful standards, smoky lounge ballads, all with a pinch of show tune style, Dejie Johnson's album offers listeners of all ages the chance to enjoy great classic songs like Bluesette, Off-Key and the immutable Why Try To Change Me Now? Dejie’s renditions of American standards like My Old Flame, Speak Low and What a Wonderful World, clearly show why she remains a familiar fixture with audiences across the country.

The songs Dejie chose for her debut CD were inspired by sheet music she inherited from her late uncle, Warren Richards, a professional pianist who played in Hollywood in the 1950’s and ‘60s for popular singers Jane Froman, Frances Langford and Dinah Shore. “I was in the 6th grade when he died suddenly,” says Johnson. “I always knew that when I did my own album, I would sing some of the tunes from Uncle Warren’s suitcase.”

Johnson’s three-decade singing career includes performances with orchestras, big bands, conga-driven retro bands, jazz trios, solo piano, and in a NYC a cappella bop duo. Dejie Johnson has performed for audiences from two to 25,000. She has appeared on stage, television, films, and in 3-D. Dejie has also lent her versatile voice to timeless, animated characters such as Judy Jetson and Josie of the Pussycats.

With 21st century tools like an interactive web address, an online store, and digital distribution for her music, Dejie is taking her high-touch musical messages to the world. She is pleased to hear that her new album is finding a new generation of fans — children ages 7 to 10. “I love it when I can really touch someone emotionally,” she adds. “It's as amazing to me as it is to them. And these are the tunes that allow that to happen.”
