LateRooms.com can announce that anyone staying in Sydney hotels in January is in for a treat as the Sydney Festival prepares to take centre stage.

The city will become a veritable feast of theatrical and artistic displays, with more than 500 performers involved throughout its three-week duration.

Now in its 33rd year, the festival is one of Australia's largest cultural celebrations.

With a range of free and ticketed events on offer, visitors to Sydney are bound to find something that suits them.

Theatrical performances at this year's event will include an updated version of the play Six Characters in Search of an Author - which was critically acclaimed during its West End run - and Oedipus Loves You, which blends modern theatre with thrash metal.

The opening night of the festival promises to be popular, with a city-wide celebration on offer in parks and streets for free.

Described as "the arts event for everyone" by the Daily Telegraph, it's not to be missed if you are in Sydney on January 9th.

Festival First Night will see artists including Kasey Chambers, The Black Arm Band and Al Green - who is making his first-ever Australian appearance - take to the stage and get the crowds dancing.

Billed as an event to "transform the city landscape into a remarkable summer playground", it is certainly something to look forward to if you are heading to Sydney in January.
