AsiaRooms.com divulges Kartini Day is a national holiday celebrated by people throughout Indonesia on April 21st.

This event, which may interest people using accommodation in Ubud or other Balinese resorts later this year, celebrates the life and achievements of Raden Ayu Kartini, an Indonesian national heroine.

Kartini is loved by many people in the country for her work to promote women's rights at a time when females still struggled with a low status in Indonesian society.

Born into an aristocratic Javanese family in 1879, when the region was still a Dutch colony, she excelled at school and learnt to speak fluent Dutch at a young age.

Kartini began to communicate with pen friends in the Netherlands and her writings from this period were later collected in a book entitled Letters of a Javanese Princess.

In her letters, she articulated many of her ideas about the emancipation of Javanese women, concepts which eventually helped to elevate the status of females throughout the country.

Each year, Kartini Day is marked by special cultural celebrations and performances across Indonesia.

Due to Ubud's status as the artistic and cultural centre of Bali, the town could be a particularly appropriate place in which to recognise the achievements of Kartini.
