BugSplat Software Launches Online Crash Monitoring and Analysis Service

Henniker, NH - October 14, 2004, - BugSplat Software announced today that it has launched its online crash analysis system for automated crash detection and monitoring. This groundbreaking technology allows software developers to automatically monitor the software crash scenarios of their user base. BugSplat's service not only collects all users' crash data but it also analyzes the data to create intelligent reporting on crash trends.

Software crashes in the field continue to be the most elusive and difficult problems for software developers. While some software crashes are repeatable, to the user most appear to be random occurrences, making the detection and correction of bugs very difficult. In the past, support departments had to rely on the user to describe the crash situation. Finding a solution to a crash with this question and answer method is often time-consuming, unreliable and expensive. BugSplat will provide support teams and software developers with tangible data that permits them to analyze the crashing system and determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The BugSplat solution allows software developers to evaluate, online and automatically, each crash that their customers encounter. Utilizing Microsoft minidmp technology, the BugSplat software enables the user to send detailed crash data to the BugSplat servers. As the bugs come into the server they are processed and analyzed. The BugSplat server then generates intelligent reports, giving the developers a clear understanding of the frequency and severity of all the crashes collected. Reports include detailed symbolic information about the state of the application at the time of the crash.

"I have managed software development teams for over twenty years and one of the most difficult problems has always been understanding what happens to our software when it is crashing in the field', said Dave Plunkett, Founder and CEO of BugSplat. "Our sole focus has been to provide software developers with the capability of analyzing crash data from the field and to provide tools that report crash information much like a debugger. BugSplat accomplishes this.'

The BugSplat solution consists of a small library to be linked with an application and the BugSplat servers that allow the development team to analyze and monitor the users' crashes. The server also has a mechanism for automating a response to the user with each crash, allowing for better customer contact and automated patch notifications. BugSplat is currently available for applications written for most versions of Microsoft Windows. Support for the Linux and MAC operating systems is being planned.
