DirectRooms.com would like to draw attention to the Philippine Declaration of Independence Commemoration, which will be held on 12th June this year. This significant moment in the country's history is not only celebrated by locals, but also attracts many visitors to the islands.

The Philippines won independence from Spain in 1898, when the colonists lost the key battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Although both the US and Spain did not recognise this declaration (the islands officially becoming independent on 4th July 1946), it is considered a major point in the history of the islands. In 1962, then President Diosdado Macapagal changed the official date for the celebration of independence from 4th July to 12th June.

The proclamation was made in Cavite, the ancestral home of General Emilio Aguinaldo, south of Manila. The new Philippine flag was also presented on this day, as was the Philippine National Anthem, "Lupang Hinirang".

Celebrations and festivities are set to take place on each of the islands, including the beautiful paradise island of Boracay. According to Lek Boonlert, Head of Marketing at DirectRooms.com, Boracay hotel will be "exceptionally popular at this time of year."

Of course stunning waterfronts such as White Beach and Puka Beach attract holidaymakers to this island all year round, but as this landmark day falls in the height of the summer season, visitors to Boracay are advised to book as early as possible. This is set to be a celebration like no other and will be a great addition to an enjoyable holiday in the Philippines.
