- Head to Auckland for the Matariki Festival

May 09, 2010 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News can reveal that this summer will see Auckland play host to one of the biggest celebrations of 2010 - the start of the Maori new year.

Various events will be held across the city between June 14th - when the first moon after the rising of the Pleiades constellation arrives - and July 14th to mark the occasion, which is known as the Matariki Festival.

Matariki is the Maori name for the constellation, which legend says was created when the Maori sky father, Ranginui, was separated from Papatuanuku, the earth mother, by their children, causing the god of wind Tawhirimatea to tear out his eyes and throw them into the heavens.

Events taking place throughout the duration of the festival include tree plantings, the Native Noise concert at Auckland Town Hall, a sports day at North Shore, Movies at the Marae, exhibitions, theatre performances, cabaret and more besides.

Visitors staying in hotels in Auckland can also try some delicious Maori cuisine and fly a Maori kite, which is a traditional activity for the first day of the new year.

The festival is a popular one that sees crowds of people throng Auckland for its duration, turning the city into a particularly lively destination.

Details of the specific events set to take place this year will be announced by the Matariki Festival's organisers as they become available.
