Dandridge,TN - With the exponential growth of homeschooling around the world, more parents of children with special learning needs are choosing to provide home-based instruction. Parents are discovering that homeschooling allows them to provide their child with a completely individualized education that caters to their physical or intellectual needs, allows plenty of time for hands on learning, life skills instruction, and offers the child the opportunity to thrive. While some children are effectively mainstreamed into the public schools, others don’t fare so well. Organizations around the world are now offering conventions, support and resources parents and professionals who work with special needs children. The staff of The Old Schoolhouse is committed to bringing those vital resources to homeschooling parents.

The Summer 2005 edition of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine offers readers an expanded “Resource Room” section. Normally a department with one to two articles about special education, this special feature offers more than triple the resources. Highlights include staff visits to conventions hosted by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and Future Horizons, the world-renowned publisher of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome resources, as well as an introduction to art and music therapy and American Sign Language. Interviewers spoke with homeschool author Christine Field, Rich Kohler of Passport Learning and Marty Noretsky of Ready! Set! Sign! Resources for teaching gifted students are examined by author Helen Barker Kiser, mother of two homeschooled gifted children.

Melonie Murray, Director of Public Relations for TOS and freelance writer, states, “I am thrilled to have been able to spearhead this project. The response from both parents and professionals has been absolutely amazing. We were able to slate most of the Summer 2006 ‘Resource Room’ while writers were still working on their pieces for the Summer 2005 issue! It is incredibly gratifying to know we are fulfilling a need in the homeschool community.”
