Breakthrough Discovery: Disk Fragmentation Slows Web Browsing

A newly released white paper discloses how disk fragmentation slows web surfing. The paper, written for Windows IT Professional Magazine by monitoring and security software expert Joe Kinsella, reveals that fragmentation can have a severe impact — tripling web browsing times!
According to Kinsella, "One of the most surprising results of this paper was that fragmentation affects the time to browse un-cached web pages (no doubt due to the increased file creation times in the internet cache). Retrieving 10 web pages that were not in the Internet Explorer cache took 10.4 seconds for a defragmented image, but 37.0 seconds in the high fragmentation image."
The paper also reveals the massive performance impact of fragmentation on other common applications such as Microsoft® Word, Microsoft Outlook, Anti-virus scans and Microsoft Anti-spyware. The author concludes that a proactive approach is needed in dealing with fragmentation in order to maximize the performance of systems. In alignment with the growing trend, Kinsella recommends automatic defragmentation: "I strongly suggest the use of automatic defragmentation software in order to minimize the administrative cost of managing and the downtime required to implement your defragmentation policy."
