Ms. Morgan was editor-in-chief of Ms, Magazine from 1989-1993 and has written books including Monster, Upstairs in the Garden and Saturday’s Child, amongst others.

Thirty-five years is an extraordinary milestone for the organization that was founded with ten checks and dollar bills totaling $100. Praised as a “flagship of the women’s movement,” the Feminist Press has pioneered the rediscovery of women writers throughout history. It plans to continue this mission for the next generation, spreading its work all over the globe.

Appropriately, Founder and Director, Florence Howe comments, “I’m traveling to Moscow this month as the guest of the Feminist Press of Russia which got its start when its founding director visited our New York offices several years ago. The Press in Russia will be celebrating their 3rd anniversary as we mark our 35th.

Since the mid-1980’s, the Press has focused on international women writers, who remain far less likely to be translated and published in the United States. Some of the recent programs include Women Writing in Africa that makes visible the culture of Africa, Women Writing in the Middle East, which gives voice to important writers from this region. Additionally, the press continues to publish provoking historical fiction suh as the series Femme Fatales: Women Write Pulp Fiction, which reissues this classic genre from the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s.

As part of the celebration, award winning authors, critics and scholars Meena Alexander, Tuzulyine Jita Allan, Marilyn French, Grace Paley and Gloria Steinem will participate in an afternoon reading at the CUNY Graduate Center.
