LateRooms.com - Discover Counterfeit Coinage in Barcelona

LateRooms.com can reveal that Barcelona's Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) has begun an exhibition entitled Counterfeit Coinage - From Antiquity to the Euro.

It is running until May 8th 2011 and showcases the types of forgeries that have existed throughout history.

The display is split into several sections, separating the artefacts into those belonging to Hispanic antiquity, the Middle Ages, the modern age and contemporary times.

Part of the fascination for visitors - arriving from the many cheap hotels Barcelona has to offer - is the chance to see how the methods have changed over the years.

"Counterfeiting has been a travelling companion of coinage right from the very start. The issuing authorities have combated it with the law, through punitive measures, and with technology, encouraging the improvement of the minting of coinage," the venue remarked.

As well as a study of the forgeries of payment cards and banknotes that are carried out in modern times, there is a variety of contextual information, such as the harsh legislation that existed against forgers in the Roman and Visigoth era.

Entrance to see the permanent collection at the MNAC costs €8.50 (£7), with tickets available at the box office or online.

Opening hours of the art space are from Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00 local time and Sunday 10:00 to 14:30. The building is closed on Mondays.

By paying an extra €3.50, people can also check out the Photographic Modernity from 1918 to 1948 exhibition.

For more information on this event visit the MNAC website or contact the venue on (00 34) 93 622 03 60.
