- Festive fun at Winter World in Berlin

September 24, 2010 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News can announce that travellers who cherish the colder months of the year should take a trip to Berlin while Winter World is in town.

Every year the German capital's Potsdamer Platz is transformed into an icy wonderland, with this year's event kicking off on October 30th 2010 and running until January 2nd 2011.

Guests staying in Berlin hotels during this period can head to the area and enjoy the somewhat surreal experience of taking part in a range of winter sports in the middle of the city.

For instance, people keen to take part in the festivities can go sledging, while Europe's largest mobile toboggan run - standing at 12m tall and 70m long - will also be erected.

If that all sounds a bit too extreme, visitors to Winter World can enjoy a sedate skate around the 520 square metre ice rink at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz.

Meanwhile, people who check out the attraction between November 22nd and December 26th will also be able to explore the special Christmas market.

A host of seasonal treats, including everything from Christmas cookies to woollen caps, will be available at its diverse stalls.

These proceedings will be given an extra festive feel thanks to the presence of golden LED decorations suspended from the streetlights in the area and draped over the trees lining the Alte Potsdamer Strasse.

The ice rink will be open daily from 10:00 until 21:30 local time, except on Saturdays when visitors can skate until 23:30.

People who do not own their skates can still join in the fun, as a pair can be rented for just 2.50 (£2).

Various booths around the site will be open throughout, offering a fine selection of hearty warm food and local sweet delicacies which should be perfect for anyone who has worked up an appetite during their time on the ice.
