Hotels-Paris.co.uk - Paris marks 50th birthday of Basquiat with an exhibition

The Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (MoM) is showing an exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat's work to celebrate what would have been his 50th birthday year.

It opened on October 15th 2010 and will be available to view until January 30th 2011 at the prestigious contemporary art venue.

This is the most comprehensive retrospective of the American artist's work to be shown in Paris, according to the organisers, making it a must-see display for fans staying in the French capital.

What is likely to make Basquiat's work popular among younger people with Paris hotel bookings is that he essentially defined a counterculture in the 1970s and later worked with Andy Warhol.

"In the course of a dazzling career, his work moved from street art to painting, offering a mix of Voodoo and Biblical mythologies, comic strips, advertising and the media, African-American music and boxing heroes and assertion of his negritude," noted a representative from the venue.

They explained that the artist became the star of the Neo-Expressionist wave, with 100 pieces of artwork on show at the MoM for guests at nearby accommodation such as the Hotel Wallace Paris to admire.

Tickets for the display cost €11 (£9.55), with the building opening from 10:00 to 18:00 local time every day, except Monday when it is closed. The complex also stays open late on Thursdays until 22:00.

Other exhibitions available at the arts space include displays devoted to Larry Clark and Didier Marcel.

For more information on this event visit the MoM website or contact the venue on +44 (0)20 7930 6601.
