Measurand Inc., to Demonstrate Motion Capture System at Montréal International Game Summit

October 14, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Montreal International Game Summit (MIGS) 2005 - Measurand will be demonstrating their ShapeWrap II motion capture system during the Montreal International Game Summit, November 2-3, 2005. ShapeWrap II is a real-time, wireless, portable and durable motion capture that goes anywhere to capture full body motion-capture, for game development & 3D animation, teaching motion capture, and engineering & research sciences.

A great improvement over rigid exoskeletons, ShapeWrap II offers a mocap system based on ShapeTapes that flex. By conforming to limbs instead of following rigid paths, ShapeWrap II moves with the body to capture fine details of shape on a wide variety of body types. ShapeWrap II is field portable, wireless and durable. Individual tapes from ShapeWrap II may be used as multi-variable 6DOF input devices for digital content creation.

Game Development & Animation Studios
Capture motion anywhere. ShapeWrap captures data in any office, a hallway, outdoors, in vehicles…wherever! Like other motion capture systems, ShapeWrap II will not replace your animators but it will allow your team to be more efficient. Create visual concepts and 3D storyboard’s in real-time! Key Features & Benefits:
•Easy to use – Capture full body data including hands and feet quickly and easily
•Data Output – outputs both BVH and C3D data formats
•3D Software Compatible – works with leading 3D animation packages (SoftImage’s XSI, MoCap & Motion Builder Pro, Maya, Lightwave, and 3D Studio Max)

“I saw a performer who had the tape wrapped around his arms and was using it to control the actions of a simulated 3-D character on screen. If you've ever dealt with motion capture systems that involve half-a-dozen cameras and cumbersome tethered body suits, the ShapeWrap idea is very compelling."

Teaching Motion Capture - In the Classroom
Ideal for classroom use ShapeWrap II does require a special studio or dedicated space.

Key Features & Benefits:
•Durable – Holds up to daily use and abuse of students
•Portable – Packs up for easy storage and works in any classroom
•Size-adjustable – Easily adjusts to fit different sizes
•Course Content – Videos, outlines and tutorials are delivered with each system

Engineering & Research Sciences - Get real-time data in the lab and out in the field
Training & Simulation
ShapeWrap captures the complete poses and movements of individuals anywhere – in simulated environments and out in the field during exercises. The use of motion capture in training and simulation applications like military, aerospace, automotive, virtual reality and others has been predominately limited to laboratory testing and training. Measurand is changing the rules and limits of motion capture with ShapeWrap II.

Human Factors
ShapeWrap is the practical solution for capturing body motion and poses of participants performing real work activities in a number of environments. Its body conforming tapes comfortably attach and do not impede body movement.

Key Features & Benefits:
•Long-Range Wireless – Capture motion just about anywhere and without bounds
•Durable – Field-rated motion capture
•Data Output – works with the industry standard JACK; delivered with API; C3D, BVH and Cartesian data output

"Vehicle crash testers and engineers involved in human factors, ergonomics and safety systems are benefiting from a lightweight flexible sensing tape that generates three-dimensional measurements along it's length."

About Measurand
No newcomer to motion capture and animation, Measurand Inc. is partnered with a number of 3D software developers and has been developing hardware tools and plug-ins for animators and their 3D packages. Measurand, incorporated in 1993, manufactures and sells shape sensors and shape-sensing arrays to a variety of markets including automotive safety, entertainment, education, and research worldwide.

Measurand pioneered the use of 3D flexible arrays of distributed sensors and specializes in quality manufacture of flexible 1D, 2D, and 3D measuring systems based on fiber optics and other technologies. All Measurand sensors are complete, requiring no knowledge of optical technology or addition of electronics for their operation. Measurand’s 2D and 3D sensors measure shape as a data set of positions and orientations along a curve or throughout an area or volume. Our powerful hardware and software products enable the measurement and control of shapes from static poses to high-speed events, in applications as diverse as virtual reality and geo-science.
