LateRooms.com - Explore Birds of a Feather exhibition in Cairns

February 27, 2011 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
An exhibition celebrating the Chinese belief that feathered friends offer good luck is open in Cairns until the end of next month.

Entitled Birds of a Feather, it includes sculptures and multimedia works representing the artists' impressions of the famous Yuen Po Street market in Hong Kong.

Here, songbirds are sold to people seeking good fortune. They are often taken by their owners to horse races, the stock exchange and other places where luck is considered crucial.

"They are normally captured in intricate small wooden, metal or bamboo cages, which are often almost as beautiful as the birds themselves," the organisers explained.

Visitors to Cairns Regional Gallery can enjoy the Tropical North Queensland city's own interpretation of Yuen Po Street at the exhibition, which launched to celebrate the Chinese new year.

Culture vultures can check out Birds of a Feather until March 21st 2011. The venue is open between 10:00 and 17:00 local time from Monday to Saturday and from 13:00 to 17:00 on Sunday.

Admission costs AU$5 per person, although under-16s are allowed in for free.

Arts enthusiasts looking for Cairns accommodation located near the gallery can use LateRooms.com to search through a wide and varied selection of hotel deals in the area.
