The DMY International Design Festival returns to Berlin with a fresh line-up of exhibitions, workshops and other special events this summer.

Running from Wednesday June 1st to Sunday June 5th at the city's Tempelhof Airport site, the annual extravaganza will showcase the latest in contemporary design trends and innovative products.

The festival's central exhibition is set to occupy an area of 14,000 sq m in the spacious aircraft hangars of Tempelhof, which ceased operating as a commercial airport in 2008.

Now used to host major public events and music festivals, the site provides an impressive backdrop for the five days of presentations, seminars and lectures at the festival.

More than 500 designers and brands from 30 nations are expected to attend the event, which is organised by local industry group DMY Berlin.

Copy Cultures and New Economies has been selected as the theme of this year's Design Symposium - a series of lectures and discussions based on key topics in the world of design.

Industry experts will debate the value of original creations and the relevance of such questions in relation to developing economies and the knowledge-sharing society.

Elsewhere, the festival is set to include a section devoted to the design community in Finland.

Visitors to this area will be treated to a preview of events scheduled to take place in Helsinki next year, as the city has been designated World Design Capital for 2012.

Festival passes, which provide holders with access to the exhibition, symposium and opening party, are priced at €45 (£39.80).

People planning to attend the festival will find a diverse selection of Berlin hotels at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Maritim Hotel Berlin.
