The inaugural Cairns Adventure Festival (CAF) will attract hordes of triathletes to the Tropical North Queensland city next month.

Organised by the team behind the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival and Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival, the event is expected to provide a major boost to the local economy and encourage thousands of people to visit the area.

The CAF's headline race will be the Challenge Cairns Great Barrier Reef, a full "iron distance" triathlon that features a 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-kilometre bike ride and 42-kilometre run.

It will take place on June 5th 2011, kicking off in the crystal clear waters off Yorkeys Knob and finishing with a sprint up the Cairns boardwalk. The bike route takes in some of the most scenic coastal roads in Australia.

Some AU$142,000 will be up for grabs in the contest, making it the second-richest triathlon on the international circuit.

In a statement, chief executive of the Challenge family of events Felix Walschofer said: "We have secured the most amazing course that includes what must be the greatest bike leg in the world."

Other highlights of the festival include a charity fun run and community concert.

Athletics enthusiasts thinking of staying in Cairns hotels at the time will find LateRooms.com.au recommends a wide array of last minute hotel deals in the city.
