LateRooms.com - Catch sailing action at Falmouth Finn Festival

April 23, 2012 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
Some of the world's top sailors will head to Cornwall next month for the JP Morgan Asset Management Finn Festival in Falmouth.

Starting on Friday May 4th, the two-week regatta will be the first Olympic-class sailing event of its kind to take place in the UK during 2012.

The programme includes the UK Open Finn National Championships (May 4th to May 7th) followed by the Finn Gold Cup, which is due to run from May 13th to May 18th.

Among the competitors will be Ben Ainslie, the UK's top Olympic sailor. With three gold medals and countless other accolades to his name, Ainslie is set to return to the waters where he made his competitive debut in 1987.

The Finn Gold Cup has not been held in the UK since 2000, when the event was hosted by Weymouth.

'Finn class' refers to the single-handed dinghy that has been used in every Olympic Games since its debut in 1952.

Zach Railey, who won Olympic silver for the US in 2008, suggested the competition in Falmouth will be particularly fierce as this summer's Olympic Games in London draw closer.

"I will be looking forward to sailing against all the best Finn sailors in the world," he said.

There will also be a full shoreside programme for spectators, including live entertainment and a large TV screen.

LateRooms.com recommends a wide range of Falmouth hotels that could appeal to sailing fans, including The Westcott.
