May 16, 2012 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
The not-for-profit Center for Lawful Access and Abuse Deterrence (CLAAD) has named San Diego-based Millennium Laboratories Inc. the organization's exclusive representative of the medication monitoring and drug testing industry. Millennium joins a diverse coalition of health care providers, law enforcement, parents, teachers, community organizations, and businesses working together to prevent prescription drug abuse while optimizing patient care.

"Recognizing that prescription drug abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, I believe Millennium's partnering with CLAAD will help ensure that this issue receives the attention and consideration of our nation's policymakers in a manner that will guarantee that it is addressed as effectively as possible," said Howard Appel, president of Millennium Laboratories. "We welcome the opportunity to join CLAAD in its efforts."

CLAAD is the national leader in identifying and advancing policies to reduce prescription drug abuse. Since 2009, CLAAD's National Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Strategy has cited the value of non-punitive urine drug monitoring in encouraging patients to follow their medication regimens and helping individuals with substance-related disorders access treatment. The Federal Government has adopted some 95 percent of the major policy recommendations CLAAD made in its 2009 and 2010 National Strategy documents.

CLAAD sets its policy priorities by consulting with more than 30 non-profit health and safety organizations as part of the annual National Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Policy Consensus Meeting. To protect the public interest, only a limited number of commercial entities with a proven commitment to CLAAD's mission of reducing prescription drug abuse while improving health care may take part in CLAAD's policy-making activities.

Through delivery of some the fastest, most comprehensive and reliable urine and saliva drug testing results in the industry, backed by expert clinical guidance and dedicated customer service, Millennium supports evidence-based patient evaluation and documentation. The company's dedication to advancing the science and field of pain management includes sponsorship and close affiliations with leading academia, industry organizations and trade associations. Millennium Research Institute, a nonprofit national research center formed in 2010, features a world-class research team that collaborates with universities, researchers, government and industry affiliates to design and execute innovative research and new educational programs and train future scientists and researchers.

Michael Barnes, spokesman for CLAAD, stated, "The value of our policy recommendations lies in the legitimacy of our coalition members. Millennium Laboratories has demonstrated its dedication to improving the public health, so we are pleased to welcome the company as our Ambassador to its industry."
