This summer is expected to bring record temperatures once again in Midwestern and Southern states, with several sad incidents already recorded in 2012 where children or pets have died after being locked in the car in hot temperatures.

A 7-year-old boy died May 3 in the Sugar Land district of Houston, TX, the terrible tragedy occurring when the boy's father, Leland Jacobsen, left him behind in the back seat of his pickup truck for several hours. Though temperatures didn't even approach typical Texas summer heat at around 89 degrees, Jacobsen told police he simply forgot about the boy.

The very same day, another boy just 13 months old passed away after his mother, who is employed as a teacher, left him locked in a hot car while ambient temperatures were just 83 degrees. The temperature in a locked vehicle left in the sunshine can be 20 degrees higher than temperatures outside. The mother forgot that she hadn't already dropped her child off at daycare.

In both cases it was a simple lapse in memory that led to the preventable deaths of children. Temperatures in Texas and the other hottest regions of the country will approach 110 degrees this summer as the hottest U.S. temperatures ever are expected by experts in the field.

At this ambient temperature it would not take long for temperatures inside a car to become unbearable, and eventually fatal. Pets would suffer the same fate if forgot about for any extended period of time. Taking children places where they must be left in the car is a poor decision in the first place, while hot summers just compound this fact.

It is against the law in some states to leave a child locked or otherwise secured in the car. This falls under child endangerment laws, as in addition to heat concerns the child is subject to predators. Parents should never leave their child locked in the car under any circumstances. It is cruel, and can even lead to jail time or involvement with authorities that must respond to cases of child endangerment.
