SAN ANTONIO, Texas — More than 200,000 Hurricane Katrina evacuees have left their homes and headed for Texas, and local San Antonians have stepped up to help them make a smoother transition. Scobey Moving & Storage, LTD, a San Antonio-based agent of Mayflower Transit, partnered with KSAT-12 TV in a food relief effort for the San Antonio Food Bank.

Scobey 's sales personnel manned the collection station throughout the day along with KSAT and food bank volunteers. Through the group’s combined efforts, they were able to collect more than 40,000 pounds of canned goods, dry foods and hygiene products. Using their moving and storage expertise, Scobey personnel loaded the abundant collection of donated items into a Mayflower truck, then sorted and palletized the items to help ease the process for the San Antonio Food Bank. The Food Bank is distributing more than 30 pallets of food and product to the evacuees daily.

"It's wonderful to see the heart of the people go out to help so many," said Chris Well, sales manager of Scobey. “I am so pleased that we could help organize the drive. We hope that our efforts make Hurricane Katrina victims’ lives a little bit easier.”

The San Antonio Food Bank is supplying the needs of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees that have been sent to San Antonio. Initially, San Antonio received 25,000 evacuees and currently has 10,000 in their shelters at Kelly USA (formerly Kelly AFB), Levis Strauss warehouse, and Windsor Park Mall facilities.
