Minneapolis orthodontics Provider Discusses Pitfalls of Bottled Water

LAKEVILLE, PRIOR LAKE AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - For the first time in 40 years, the amount of preschoolers that have visited their family dentist with cavities has risen.

"There are various causes contributing to this trend," said Prior Lake and Minneapolis orthodontics provider. "Bottled water is thought to be one of those causes."

Bottled water is a better option for children's teeth than the sugar-filled sports, energy and soft drinks, but it still can cause decay because it does not contain the same level of fluoride as tap water.

In 2009, a study published in the "Pediatric Dentistry" journal was published and concluded that 69 percent of parents studied give their children bottled water exclusively or with tap water.

Typically, some bottled water brands lack the levels of fluoride needed for good oral health. This information is especially important to parents with children younger than 8 years old, since their teeth continue to develop.

Even families using a home water filter system instead of bottled water are still at risk for developing cavities because water treatment systems reduce the amount of fluoride in tap water.

"Parents should not think because they give their kids bottled water to drink that their kids will not get the amount of fluoride needed," says Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a St. Paul orthodontist offering services such as invisible braces. "There are certain precautions parents can take to prevent decaying of their children's teeth."

Many fluoride toothpastes, rinses and dietary supplements are sold in stores today and dentists offer in-office fluoride treatments.

Constant snacking, consuming sugary beverages and a lack of understanding regarding the American Dental Association's recommendations about children's dental visits are additional causes for the increase in children getting cavities.

Parents can help their children develop good oral health habits by assisting their children with brush their teeth twice a day and choosing beverages that have fluoride. Taking these tips into account reduces the risk of developing cavities and being forced to undergo extensive dental procedures.
