LateRooms.com - Head to London's Tate Modern for Edvard Munch The Modern Eye

July 12, 2012 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
A new exhibition of Edvard Munch's paintings is now open at the Tate Modern in London, where art lovers will be encouraged to reconsider their views of the Norwegian artist.

Edvard Munch: The Modern Eye attempts to highlight the 20th century influences of the painter, who was born in 1863 and died in 1944.

Munch, best known for his 1893 work The Scream, has traditionally been portrayed as an artist whose work is best understood in the context of 19th century symbolism and pre-expressionism.

However, the Tate Modern's display attempts to trace the impact of 20th century events on Munch's work and show how his art can be positioned amid the emergence of modernism.

It also offers a rare chance to see a large number of Munch's works in one place, as the Tate actually owns just one - 1907's The Sick Child.

Many of the paintings on display in The Modern Eye are normally housed at the Munch Museum in Oslo, with rare examples of his work in film and photography also included.

Tickets are priced at £14 and the exhibition is due to run until Sunday October 14th.

LateRooms.com offers a wide range of discount hotels that could suit art enthusiasts heading to the Tate Modern, including The Gardens.
