Last week, Serverway.net, a web hosting and game server provider, introduced what they call an industry's first in game server control. Serverway has made it possible for customers to access the console of their servers, which basically shows you everything that is happening on the server, without opening any security holes.

"Most companies simply can not offer this kind of control due to security," explained Ray Cockburn, who designed the system. "It is nearly impossible to offer complete console access like this, in real-time, without giving the user expedited privileges on the system".

While this technology only works on their Linux-based games at this time, they plan to devise a way to do the same for Windows-based games in the near future.

"The whole idea behind this is simple, really. We have created a custom shell, which relays information between the game server and the user. The user simply logs in the SSH like you normally would, but rather than given access to a bash prompt, they are given access to our custom shell. With our system, you can literally debug problems without needing to contact support. Not only does it help out the customer, it should cut down on support requests as well".
