Courier company Parcel2Go welcomes online sales growth

Parcel delivery firm Parcel2Go has welcomed the findings of a recent study, which indicated that online retail sales posted their strongest growth of the year in July.

According to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, online sales rose by 17 per cent year-on-year in July and were also up by nine per cent from the previous month. The run-up to the London Olympics was highlighted as a potential factor driving the surge in online trading, although growth in the year to date has been generally strong at 13 per cent.

"There's no doubt that consumer habits are changing rapidly, and the current shift towards online shopping looks set to gather further momentum over the coming months and years," said Les Yates at Parcel2Go. "Shopping online provides consumers with the sort of convenience they've come to expect. The fact people can have their items delivered directly to them by a courier company saves them from having to endure all the hassle and stress that so often goes hand-in-hand with high street shopping."

The IMRG Capgemini survey also found that sales of electrical goods were particularly strong in July, rising by 30 per cent from July 2011 as consumers prepared for the TV coverage of all the sporting action. Some spells of improved weather, meanwhile, contributed to a rebound in clothing sales, which were up by 18 per cent month-on-month and 15 per cent higher than in July last year.

Online-only and catalogue retailers posted year-on-year growth of 19.5 per cent in July, some 4.5 per cent more than their multichannel competitors, while online-only average basket spend soared by 23 per cent to £101.
