Edmonton, Alberta, October 19, 2012 – Drayden Insurance likes that fall has officially set in with the changing colours of the leaves that are starting to drop, it's time to start thinking of fall/winter home maintenance items that need to be addressed prior to the snow falling. Following simple preventative tips can help save money on possible future home insurance claims.

There are a number of important items that may need inspection and servicing. Home owners may want to get their furnace, fireplace &/or woodstove and hot-water tank inspected and serviced prior to the upcoming winter season. Living in Alberta one never knows when a blizzard is on its way! Have a quick check of the water main and plumbing for leaks and drain any external garden hoses to prevent freezing.

Structurally speaking home owners want to check the home's exterior; including foundation, windows & doors for any cracks, possible leaks or caulking and weather-stripping that may be in need of repair. If the house has storm windows and summer screens now's the time to swap them out. A houses downspouts, roof & gutters will also need a thorough check as winter can be damaging to these and can cause other issues if not properly maintained.

"Making sure your home is ready for winter" states Jodi Cromie, Personal Lines Manager for Drayden Insurance, "will reduce the chance of a claim during our long winters here in Alberta."

With respect to outdoor space, ensure the lawnmower is stored safely, and check that the snow-blower is running well. Also make sure you have the proper snow removal equipment; shovels, ice chippers, sand or ice-melt.

Lastly, make sure that the house is never without a proper emergency kit that will be helpful in the event of power outages or other crisis situations. This kit should include candles, matches, blankets, and emergency phone numbers for all utility companies, bottled water & non-perishable food and a first aid kit. Most people have these items in their home year round, but keeping them stocked for these types of occurrences is vital.
