Health and safety professionals to receive large pay increases in 2013

HSE and OHS professionals will receive large salary increases in 2013, according to the latest Global Salary Survey from specialist recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.

A senior HSE advisor is tipped to enjoy salary increases of up to 13%, while HSE managers, advisors and administrators are all expecting to receive increases of up to 10%. An experienced OHS consultant can demand up to 25% more in 2013, with these professionals expected to be paid up to $200k.

Matthew Haynes, Robert Walters manager of mining and resources recruitment explains, "2012 was a tough year for mining and resources recruitment, as most hiring plans were dependant on commodity prices.

However, as occupational health, safety and environment professionals are a statutory requirement for any site, job levels remained consistent. As the market stabilises and projects come back online, the demand for these professionals is expected to further increase, and competition for the most experienced candidates will be fierce."

The survey also found;
  • Despite the slowdown in recruitment activity there were still skill shortages, particularly of technical services at site candidates, longwall professionals and skilled mining managers
  • The CSG industry will continue to hire skilled experienced professionals, as investment in this industry continues
  • The most in demand professionals are set to include CSG specialists, geologists, metallurgists, and exploration professionals. However, salary levels are expected to generally remain stable, as many projects were put on hold
