SANTA MONICA, CA – One of America's foremost cancer surgeons and researchers, Dr. Anton Bilchik, congratulates all the researchers who have been making headway in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of cancer, ranking as the 5th most fatal form of the disease in developing nations, according to the American Cancer Society. Recently, however, several developments in the fight against it are giving patients and doctors hope that progress toward a cure is being made. Advancements in chemotherapy pairing the drugs gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel has been shown in international clinical trials to prolong survival. Several forms of targeted therapies, including growth factor inhibitors and anti-angiogenesis factors, are also being studied as ways to attack the cancer to further prolong survival. Immune therapies or vaccines that help a patient's body's ability to fight off the cancer themselves are also showing positive results, leading to some optimism amongst the oncology community.

For each of the last 10 years Dr. Bilchik has been named as one of America's Top Cancer Doctors and is the founder of the California Oncology Research Institute and Chief of Gastrointestinal Research at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's Health Center. He has been practicing medicine for over 28 years and is thought of as one of the foremost experts on the disease nationally.
