Christmas Has Gone to the Dogs

Does your holiday shopping list include gifts for four legged companions? Sparky, Chocolate, and Fluffy are receiving gifts in record numbers. From their own stockings on the mantel, to wrapped gifts under the tree, Fido is rivaling the kids in presents. In fact, sometimes the furry ones are the kids. Due to delays in marriage and childbirth, our pets are sometimes treated as children; complete with pet strollers, daycare, play dates and of course, premium food and toys.

8 out of 10 dog owners expect to buy Holiday gifts for their pet this season according to a survey conducted by American Pet Products Manufacturing Association (APPMA).
Pets are big business and Americans are right on track to spend $35.9 billion in 2005 to buy and care for their pets says the APPMA.

What are these pets getting? Some popular stocking stuffers include personalized collars and leads, monogrammed sweaters, spa products, specialty pet beds, toys, and of course, food. Think gourmet dog treats. Think organic shampoos and conditioners to help keep one well-groomed.

Pets have become part of the family and people are including their pets in their lives in a whole new way. From the popularity of yappy hours at barkeries (that’s a dog bakery) to backyard doggie birthday parties, socializing with your pet is an acceptable way to spend your time. So why not spoil them a little?

“Dogs are social creatures, they like to get out and meet other dogs and other people. They don’t want to be cooped up all day and always left behind.” says Jennifer April, owner of Baggins’ Best Biscuits, an all-natural dog treat business located in Doylestown, PA.

So, spend a little quality time with your pooch and if you want to offer a token to show your appreciation for his unbridled affections, well, go right ahead, you’re in good company.
