A photography graduate of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) at Maidstone has won the Daily Telegraph's Big Picture competition.

Dan Sakal, who graduated from BA (Hons) Photography & Media Arts last year at UCA - http://www.ucreative.ac.uk/photography-courses , won the ongoing photography contest on 24 April 2013.

Dan, who is 22 and from Colchester, said: "It feels great to win this competition and to know that the judges liked my photo most out of all the entries.

"I was really excited when I found out that my photo would be published in the Daily Telegraph because I love it when my images are used in print and they printed a really good size image, too.

"This could really help kick-start my career as it will help get my name noticed and hopefully lead to more freelance work or people wanting to buy the photos that I've already taken."

He captured the winning image of two tigers play fighting while travelling around Thailand.

Dan explained: "I took this at a tiger sanctuary where they don't drug the animals so when they get excited, they really get really excited and playful.

Dan says he learned a lot from his time at UCA.

He said: "Studying at UCA has made me look differently at the way I shoot: I feel that my confidence with a camera has improved and that I have a much better understanding of lighting and can quickly adapt to capture an image.

"I also feel that I'm much better at picking images from a crowd and can spot a great image much better because of what I learned at UCA."
