Anton Bilchik MD, PhD, FACS, Professor of Surgery and Chief of Medicine at the John Wayne Cancer Institute, was recently cited in a medical journal published by Elsevier. Specifically his 2006 article, "Improving respectability of hepatic colorectal metastases: Expert consensus statement," was cited in the recent study. Numerous researchers worldwide have used Dr.Bilchik's research to help further advance oncological treatments and more.

This most recent study to cite Dr. Bilchik, entitled "Right and extended-right hepatectomies for unilobar colorectal metastases: Impact of portal vein embolization on long-term outcome and liver recurrence," tackled a controversial issue within the treatment of liver cancer. The controversy is with portal vein embolization (PVE) and its possible connection with prognosis after colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). The study focused on the long-term impact of PVE on patients after a major hepatectomy.

The study viewed patients from 1998 to 2010, from which group A underwent preoperative PVE, and group B was the control. Over this time period, it was concluded that PVE had no effect on the rate of tumor recurrence in the liver. PVE did not affect likelihood of survival among patients undertaking right or right-extended hepatectomy for unilobar, right-sided colorectal liver metastases.

As one of the leading international figures in modern oncology, Anton Bilchik has received numerous awards and accolades around the world, including the distinction of being recognized as one of "America's Top Doctors" by USA World News and Report and Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.'s. Recently, Dr. Bilchik was interviewed by Anderson Cooper on his popular CNN program "Anderson Cooper 360", as an expert on pancreas cancer. Dr. Bilchik is actively involved in developing innovative strategies to improve survival and quality of life in patients with liver and pancreas cancer.
