Porsche Bests All Brands in Revamped J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

NASHUA, N.H., July 2, 2013 — With automakers introducing a variety of new vehicle technologies in recent years, J.D. Power and Associates decided to redesign its Initial Quality Study (IQS) for 2013 to better analyze how brands are faring with those added features. After gathering more detailed feedback from drivers this year, the consumer-research firm found that, on average, Porsche experienced the fewest overall vehicle problems of any auto brand. Meanwhile, the 2013 Porsche Boxster and Porsche 911 were found to have the best overall quality in the Compact Premium Sporty Car and Midsize Premium Sporty Car categories, respectively.

To determine its 2013 IQS, J.D. Power surveyed more than 83,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2013 models about their first 90 days of ownership, asking 233 questions that covered each vehicle's powertrain, exterior, and interior, as well as its features and accessories. Porsche led all brands with just 80 problems per 100 vehicles (80 PP100), easily outpacing the industry average of 113 PP100 and besting second-place GMC by 10 fewer problems per 100 vehicles.

"This year's redesigned IQS found that nearly two-thirds of all vehicle problems were related to poor design instead of malfunctions of some sort, but Porsche owners largely avoid those issues because the automaker has some of the best designers and engineers in the world," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. "Porsche has grown beyond its long-standing reputation for style and performance by integrating in-car technology that is both sophisticated and user friendly. That's something that even the most tech-focused brands have struggled to accomplish."

Receiving the top rating of "among the best" in the Features & Accessories design category of the J.D. Power IQS, Porsche offers its Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system as an option on all of its models. Using a high-resolution touchscreen, the PCM system allows drivers to easily control their music selections from various sources, make hands-free phone calls and initiate navigation requests.

For 2013, Porsche added integration with Aha as an available feature in its PCM system, enabling drivers to sync their favorite web content between their smartphones and their car with personalized radio-like stations. In addition to tapping Internet radio, audiobooks and podcasts, the Aha Radio app provides Apple iOS or Android device users with read-aloud access to their Facebook and Twitter feeds, traffic and weather reports, customized restaurant recommendations and Google POI searches.

"Porsche may be known first and foremost for its unrivaled performance and classic style, but even when you look at the brand's technology, it is held to extremely high standards," added Bedell. "Facebook and Twitter might be the last things on drivers' minds when they are behind the wheel of a Porsche Boxster or 911, but when they need to stay connected, they can do it without having to fumble for their phones."
