Guitar-shaped Deck Rocks MoistureShield Composite Decking

Dixon Springs, Ill., July 2, 2013 – Nashville, Detroit, Austin, and now Dixon Springs. What makes this rural community nestled in the hills of southern Illinois worthy of inclusion with these famous music cities? Simple: Guitar Deck. Music lovers Stephanie Brown and Rick Street have completed restoration of their locally popular guitar-shaped deck using MoistureShield® composite decking.

While planning their private pond, the couple knew they wanted a dock for fishing and entertaining friends, but neither of them anticipated that it would bring their backyard so much attention. Pictures posted on their Facebook page went viral, earning over 40,000 shares on multiple sites.

"We were blown away by all of the likes and shares on the Internet," Stephanie said. "By the time our original photo went viral, our deck had been subjected to the elements for three years. It was badly in need of re-staining, and many cracked or warped boards needed replacement. People wanted to come and see it, but we were embarrassed to show the deck in its weathered condition."

Understanding their frustrations and appreciating the uniqueness of the design, MoistureShield stepped in to give the couple their gorgeous deck back. MoistureShields composite decking line had two perfect colors to fit the deck's previous look and feel while offering a much more durable surface that will last and look beautiful for a lifetime.

The guitar deck is a field-scale version of Stephanie's classic, six-string acoustic guitar in which the guitar's body forms the main part of the deck, while access from the shore is across the neck. No detail is left out: spaces between boards represent the strings, the frets graduate down in length to the sound hole, and the string boards continue beyond the hole to the bridge. The guitar's "head" sports lighted pegs and solar panel keys that turn so they can "tune" the guitar.

Not only was MoistureShield able to recreate the beauty of their first wood deck, but using composite decking also offered new features that refined the guitar. Hidden fasteners allowed for the deck to have a screw-free surface, while wood grain patterns in the boards helped create a more realistic look to the body of the guitar. Because composites like MoistureShield are so easy to shape, boards were molded to the sides of the neck and body to trim the dock and give the guitar an almost 3D look.

MoistureShield composite decking and railing is available in eight attractive colors and with a lifetime warranty to ensure its enduring beauty. With 95% total recycled content, including recycled plastic grocery bags and packaging film, MoistureShield is also an environmentally responsible choice.
