The Economics of Substrates

November 26, 2004 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
In every business, profit is the number one concern. And in order to have profit, shop owners and business tycoons have to make sure that operation run more efficiently and effectively. This entails a lot of strategies and planning to come up with an ideal setup to maximize the capacity of each business endeavor. Whether it's a big or small enterprise, the driving force behind every decision and purchase emanates from one objective—- to make profits.

In order to do this, printers and shop owners oftentimes invest in new technologies designed to help them streamline their production process and enhance output. They spend thousands of dollars just to be able to have the latest technology available. No wonder that manufacturers and developers constantly update their inventions. Profit can be had with these printer providers.

Nevertheless, print providers are overlooking the most subtle tool that can help save time and money. The media, or otherwise known as the substrate. This is one component on which images are digitally printed that can play a surprisingly big role in the economics and efficiency of the production process. Some may be more expensive upfront that it might seem like you're investing on something inconsequential. They often cost more than standard papers that printers traditionally use. However, they could mean more benefits in the long run. In addition, the more you invest in quality paper, the higher the quality of jobs that you are eventually going to produce.

There are a lot of new materials nowadays to compete with the influx of new technologies in line with the equipment used in printing. There are now alternatives to rigid laminating films that have a built-in fluoropolymer protection layer which provides the protective qualities of lamination without the bulky feel of a film overlaminate. Then there is the new generation of laminates that offer both adhesive and image-receptive properties.

Another breakthrough is the introduction of a new type of inkjet transfer media for package prototyping. These types produce fast turnaround of print package prototypes on wide format inkjet printers. In addition, there are also cast vinyl films with inkjet receptive coatings that are available for printing soft package prototypes using a wide format inkjet printer. These cast vinyl provide brand marketers, consumer goods package designers and printers an easy and inexpensive way to mock up package prototypes for test marketing and presentations.

Whatever the kind of substrate, it all depends on what your production process will be. These are only a few of the new substrates out in the market. Don't just look at the bigger picture, or the bigger investment for that matter. It pays a lot to consider investing in solutions that can help you save time and money. Substrates are just small pieces of the pie. But put together, they could become formidable tools to save your budget and help you increase profits.
