Local Dental Office Supports Fundraiser for Special Olympics New York

October 28, 2014 - Massapequa Park, NY – Marvin A. Price, DDS, has started a team to participate in, and raise funds for, the rUNDEAD 5k, a marathon organized by Special Olympics New York.

The rUNDEAD 5k Zombie Race is a twist on a traditional marathon; runners will be equipped with belts and attached flags (as in flag football) and will have to navigate a course that is populated by zombies – other rUNDEAD participants who will try to steal flags from the runners as they pass. Those runners who reach the finish line with at least one flag will be qualified to earn prizes.

But the real goal is to raise funds for Special Olympics New York, an organization that supports athletes all year-round with Olympic-style competitions.

Dr. Price explains his office's participation by stating, "We wanted to find an opportunity to give back to our community through participation in a fundraising event. My hygienist, Monica, informed us of this Special Olympics fundraiser, and when I heard the name 'rUNDEAD', the first thing I thought of was my favorite musical group – The Grateful Dead. So, our office has formed a team, called 'The Grateful Undead' to sponsor a table at the event and to provide runners and zombies to participate in the action. Our team uniform will be tie-dyed, in reference to the musical group and their fan base."

Thus far, the rUNDEAD 5k has raised more than $13,000, which will go toward sponsoring Special Olympics New York athletes.

"We're excited to be able to do something so enjoyable that benefits our community in such an important way. Our entire team is dedicated to helping others improve their oral health and we wanted to extend our reach by sponsoring other activities to help improve the lives of folks in our area," Dr. Price adds.

Participants can choose to run the 5k, or can sign up to be a zombie for the day and hide out in spots on the course where they'll attempt to steal flags from the runners. Participants can start their own teams to run the race, run as an individual, or join an existing team. The rUNDEAD for Special Olympics will take place on Saturday, November 8th at Brady Park in Massapequa Park, NY.
