Levaquin Lawsuit News: Consolidation of Fluoroquinolone Peripheral Neuropathy Claims To Be Discussed on July 30th, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

July 24, 2015 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
July 24, 2015 - Levaquin lawsuits (http://www.levaquinlawsuitcenter.com/) and other product liability claims filed on behalf of patients who developed peripheral neuropathy and permanent nerve damage allegedly related to the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics continue to mount in courts throughout the country, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. Court records indicate that the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) is considering a motion to consolidate all federally-filed peripheral neuropathy claims involving Levaquin, Avelox and Cipro in a single court for the purposes of coordinated pretrial proceedings. According to an Order issued on June 10, 2015, the Panel will hear oral arguments on the matter during its July 30th Hearing Session in San Francisco, California. "Dozens of lawsuits have already been filed against the manufacturers of Levaquin, Avelox and Cipro, all of which put forth similar allegations regarding the potential for these antibiotics to cause peripheral neuropathy. This litigation has the potential to be large, and could well warrant the type of consolidation being considered by the Panel," says Sandy A. Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently investigating potential legal claims on behalf of individuals who allegedly developed peripheral neuropathy due to Levaquin, Avelox or Cipro.

Fluoroquinolone Litigation
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are used to treat certain bacterial infections, including respiratory infections urinary tract infections, E. coli, salmonella, staph infections, and chlamydia. In August 2013, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the manufacturers of all oral and injectable fluoroquinolones to update their product labels to better describe the risk of peripheral neuropathy. Although information regarding the potential for serious nerve damage was added to the labeling in 2004, the FDA determined that the potential rapid onset and risk of permanence had not been adequately described.

According to court records, at least 59 product liability claims have been filed in various federal courts on behalf of individuals who allegedly developed peripheral neuropathy as a result of treatment with Levaquin, Avelox and Cipro. In May, plaintiffs filed a Motion with the JPML asking that a multidistrict litigation be established for these cases in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois. Plaintiffs contend that consolidation of the docket will reduce duplicative discovery, avoid conflicting pretrial rulings, and serve the convenience of the parties, witnesses and the courts.
