Levaquin Lawsuit Attorneys at Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comment on Consolidation of Federal Antibiotic Peripheral Neuropathy Claims

August 18, 2015 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
August 18, 2015 - The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has agreed to consolidate dozens of federally-filed Levaquin lawsuits (http://www.levaquinlawsuitcenter.com/) and other fluoroquinolone antibiotic cases involving the drugs' alleged association with long-term peripheral neuropathy in single federal court. According to the Panel's August 17th Transfer Order, all pending claims involving Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox, as well as those filed in the future, will be transferred to the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota, for the purposes of coordinated pretrial proceedings. "Our Firm has heard from a number of patients who are alleged to have developed permanent peripheral neuropathy due to their use of Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones. Centralization of these claims in the District of Minnesota will allow the cases to proceed more efficiently, and will preserve the resources of the courts, parties and witnesses," says Sandy A. Liebhard LLP, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently investigating product liability claims on behalf of individuals who allegedly developed peripheral neuropathy due to Levaquin, Avelox or Cipro.

Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics and Peripheral Neuropathy
Court documents indicate that at least 78 peripheral neuropathy lawsuits have been filed in various federal courts on behalf of individuals who allegedly experienced long-term or permanent nerve damage due to their use of Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox. The litigation involving these antibiotics began to grow in 2013, shortly after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the drugs' manufacturers to strengthen wording on their labels regarding the potential for peripheral neuropathy.

Plaintiffs who have filed Levaquin lawsuits claim that this serious complication could have been avoided if better warnings had been provided to doctors and patients. Among other things, they point out that the connection between peripheral neuropathy and fluoroquinolones was recognized in 2001, when a study published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy detailed 45 cases of the condition among people treated with the antibiotics. At least 84% of the cases were characterized as "severe," while more than half persisted for a year or more.

Individuals who were diagnosed with permanent peripheral neuropathy allegedly due to their use of a fluoroquinolone may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
