College Democrats of New York, the largest College Democrats State Federation in the country, officially called on Tuesday for opposition to the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.

“If the Senate confirms Alito,” said Ethan Porter, President of CDNY, “the Supreme Court will have moved definitively to the far right. College students will feel the consequences of such a shift for the rest of their lives; Sam Alito must be vigorously opposed.” Christopher Coes, the Legislative Director of CDNY, agreed. “Alito’s record alone should raise alarm,” said Coes, “particularly among minorities and women, not to mention all Americans who are concerned about their right to privacy.”

CDNY also made plans to rally the CDNY membership in a statewide effort. In the week left before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s scheduled vote on Alito, CDNY will contact College Democrats chapter leaders at over 120 colleges throughout New York with information on opposing the Alito nomination.

College Democrats of New York is the largest state organization within College Democrats of America, with affiliated chapters at 129 colleges.
