January 27, 2016 - At the start of the year, many people think about New Year's resolutions and decluttering their homes. Even if you haven't started yet, you can still achieve your goal. It doesn't have to be an overwhelming process, and you'll feel renewed and relaxed in your more open space. In fact, decluttering your house can lead to other positive changes in your behavior as well. Often there is obvious clutter that is relatively easy to pack up and move to a storage facility. Cathedral Village Self Storage suggests starting with these areas to declutter for the new year.

Pool Toys and Summer Items
Many people are lucky to live where the winters are generally mild and they can enjoy many outdoor activities. However, although you may sit outside to entertain friends, most people aren't using the pool in the winter. Since outdoor temperatures can change drastically in a just a few days, sometimes winter sneaks up on us. Look around…do you still have rafts and pool toys laying around outside? The good thing is that this cleanup is pretty easy as these items aren't delicate. Throw away any damaged rafts or toys, pack up the rest of the summer items and your yard will feel immediately bigger and more appealing.

Holiday Decorations
Many people enjoy keeping their holiday decorations around well past New Year's Eve, but soon, these decorations can begin to feel like clutter. These items may be fragile and need a little more attention for storage. There are many specialty holiday storage containers to help you carefully pack Christmas tree ornaments, wreaths, and holiday China. Once these decorations are put away, many people feel refreshed and ready to tackle new projects.

Older Toys and Clothes
With the holiday season comes a lot of new toys and other items. Finding space for these additional things can be a challenge. This is a good time to go through the older toys and throw away what is broken, donate good toys to charity, or pack up toys that are sentimental that you want to keep, but the kids no longer use. This is also good time to go through kids clothes closets, and probably your own as well. You will create space to put away new things and possibly find some old favorites that were lost in your wardrobe.

General Clutter
The holiday season can also help us be a little bit lazy and relaxed, and maybe you have allowed piles of general clutter to grow in corners and flat surfaces. Take just a bit of time to go through the catalogs on the table and file or throw away holiday cards and any other papers laying around. You may also have a stack of books that you read (or didn't) that should be put away on a bookshelf or extra items you pulled out for guests (extra dishes, towels, etc.). Clearing off these spaces will make your house feel more clean and fresh.

When you declutter for the new year, you help create a positive start and a bit of the "out with the old, in with the new" attitude. However, if you find that even with a good amount of effort you still don't have enough space for seasonal items or other important things you want to keep, consider moving these things to a safe and clean storage unit at centrally located Cathedral Village Self Storage. Our resident manager Betty is available to help you decide what size storage unit you might need, and you can even use our truck for free! So, there are no excuses. Declutter your home, move special items to a storage facility, and start the new year feeling great!
