Levaquin Lawsuits Move Forward, as Bernstein Liebhard LLP Notes Issuance of First Pretrial Order in Federal Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics Litigation

February 16, 2016 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
February 16, 2016 - More than 300 peripheral neuropathy lawsuits (http://www.rxinjuryhelp.com/levaquin/peripheral-neuropathy/) filed against the manufacturers of Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox continue to move forward in a multidistrict litigation now underway in the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota. The Court issued its first Pretrial Order on February 12, 2016, which addressed a number of procedural issues, including the scheduling of future Status Conferences and the structure of Plaintiffs' leadership. The Order notes, among other things, that the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee must file a Master Complaint with the Court no later than March 14, 2016, along with a Short Form Complaint as Exhibit A. (In Re: Fluoroquinolone Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2642)

"Our Firm has heard from numerous individuals concerned about the alleged association between the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics like Levaquin and peripheral neuropathy. The adoption of the Master and Short Form Complaints in the federal litigation will do much to streamline the process for filing these lawsuits," says Sandy A. Liebhard LLP, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is offering free, no-obligation Levaquin lawsuit reviews to patients who were diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy that could be associated with the use of a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Fluoroquinolone Peripheral Neuropathy Litigation
Levaquin, Cipro, Avelox and other fluoroquinolones are used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including staph, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, E. coli and salmonella. However, the serious side effects associated with these medications have been the subject of concern in recent years. While the possibility of peripheral neuropathy was first noted on the drugs' labeling in 2004, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered their manufacturers to strengthen the labels in 2013 to better reflect the rapid onset of peripheral neuropathy symptoms as well as the potential for permanence.

At least 360 peripheral neuropathy lawsuits have been filed in the District of Minnesota on behalf of patients who allegedly developed serious and permanent nerve damage due to their use of Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox. Plaintiffs accuse the drug's manufacturers of failing to adequately warn doctors and patients about this possible complication, and further contend that they may have avoided serious injury if more appropriate warnings had been provided.

Individuals treated with Levaquin, Cipro or Avelox may be eligible to join this litigation if they were diagnosed with permanent peripheral neuropathy following treatment with one of these antibiotics.
