Boston Scientific, Coloplast Lead European Erectile Dysfunction Device Market Driven by Three-Piece Implant Popularity

January 18, 2017 - Vancouver, BC – According to a new series of reports on the European market for urological devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), growth in the erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment market is tied to the overwhelming popularity of inflatable devices, which represent over 98% of the total penile implant market. Sales of inflatable devices are driven by the popularity of the three-piece implants. This is due mainly to its superior clinical quality in comparison to the two-piece inflatable alternative. Malleable devices are the least expensive penile implant device with the simplest design and operative procedure, making them the most suitable for patients with limited dexterity.

"The erectile dysfunction treatment device market is driven by the prevalence of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and increases in the senior population," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "On the other hand, the market is limited by the use of alternative treatment methods, including vacuum erection devices and, most notably, drug therapy."

Downward pressure on unit sales is due to poor patient awareness of available options, and the fact that the procedure for penile implantation is quite invasive. Reimbursement rates tend not to affect sales volumes of penile implants as much as other products, as the main clientele for these devices tend to be wealthy and prefer private healthcare options over public ones. The average selling price (ASP) is mainly influenced by sales of three-piece inflatable systems, which dominated overall sales.

Three-piece models are the most expensive with an approximate 45% difference in ASP as compared to two-piece devices. With only two leading competitors in the European market, Boston Scientific and Coloplast, the ASP is not greatly affected by pricing pressures. Thus, market growth will be driven mostly by increasing sales volumes.

Boston Scientific's acquisition of American Medical Systems male portfolio led them to gain the majority market share within the European ED device market. The company offers a broad line of penile implant devices including their AMS 700™ MS series of three-piece inflatable devices, their AMS Ambicor® two-piece inflatable device and their AMS Spectra™ Concealable Penile Prosthesis non-inflatable penile implant. Coloplast is the second-leading competitor in the European erectile dysfunction treatment device market with their Titan® line of inflatable penile prosthesis products as well as malleable penile prostheses. One competitive advantage that Coloplast has over Boston Scientific is that they offer a full range of penile implants, including malleable devices.

The company's strategy of focusing on customer satisfaction and directly targeting the needs of their end-users has allowed them to gain market share from Boston Scientific, particularly in sales of their three-piece inflatable devices. Other notable competitors in the European market for erectile dysfunction devices include Promedon and Zephry Surgical Implants among others.
