Advances in Underground Pipeline Design, Construction and Management, a new book by Dr. Jey Jeyapalan has recently been published.

The primary goal of this new book is to familiarize owners, utilities, engineers and contractors interested in pipeline design, construction and asset management with the recent body of knowledge and to alert them to common problems. Dr. Jeyapalan has documented many valuable lessons learned while working on over 450 pipelines in 30 countries.

This "how to" design handbook includes all pipe materials, sample design calculations, excel spread sheets, and full length unedited technical specifications for pipe materials and bedding systems from real projects he has completed for his clients. The book will save hundreds of man hours of engineers' time for many years to come.

Everyone in the underground pipeline industry knows it is not easy for a design engineer to select the most suitable type of pipe for a project. Why? They are many reasons:

  • The lack of formal classes in underground pipeline design, construction and management in any of the world's universities.
  • Inadequate understanding of the pipe - soil interaction principles.
  • The wide-ranging behavior of pipe materials.
  • Claims and counterclaims of pipe manufacturers.
  • Inconsistent design standards, sometimes by the same governing body, for different pipe materials.
  • Political pressure brought on the engineer by pipe interest groups.

  • This book is arranged in the order in which Dr. Jey taught the material as a two-day seminar around the world from 1984-2008 in hotels and in the conference rooms of leading utilities, to more than 5,000 owners, utilities, regulatory officials, pipe manufacturers, pipe trade associations, engineers and contractors. To protect the integrity of the content, the course was offered truly independent of any vendor participation or sponsorship. This was the only course of this type in the world providing information on recent advances in pipeline materials, design, construction, and rehabilitation year-after-year. Often, an engineer attending more gained enormous value each time, due to the evolving nature of the content. Unlike seminars by pipe interest groups where what you see on the screen is often printed in their seminar notes, in this book, material is included material which will require readers to think on their own and rely on their own engineering judgment to question what they have been doing for years and what they have been told by others. There are 15 chapters and 10 appendices of excel sheets of pipe designs and sample full length technical specifications. You will find this book extremely valuable in your work.

    About the Author:
Dr. Jeyapalan graduated from the University of Sri Lanka with first class honors in Civil Engineering; from Monash University with a master's degree in Applied Mathematics; and from the University of California at Berkeley with masters and doctoral degrees in geotechnical engineering with minors in structural engineering and engineering mechanics. He also was an engineering professor in USA and Germany. He is a renowned global water, wastewater, desalination, oil and gas pipeline industry expert with over 45 years of experience in pipeline design, market positioning of new technologies, construction methods, trenchless technology, pipeline integrity assessment and rehabilitation, telecommunications, underground utilities and structures, hydropower penstocks and tunnels up to 14.6 m. in diameter, industry standards, codes and regulations, and sharing rights-of-way of existing pipelines to house optical fiber networks and other cables.

Dr. Jeyapalan has worked as an expert witness on numerous lawsuits and claims for failures of pipelines made of clay, concrete, steel, ductile iron, plastics, and composites and underground cables. Dr. Jeyapalan has completed over 400 projects in Algeria, Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Iceland, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Dr. Jeyapalan's writings on pipelines, cables, sharing rights of way, and underground structures are used widely in engineering practice. He chaired the Executive Committee of the Pipeline Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the 1st and 2nd International Conferences on Advances in Underground Pipeline Engineering sponsored by the ASCE.

Dr. Jeyapalan was the founding chair of the ASTM International Committee F-36, writing global standards on the last mile technologies, FTTX, underground utilities, cables, asset management, etc. He serves on numerous other pipe and cable related standard writing bodies, technical committees and working groups within ASTM, AWWA, ASCE, Cigre', and IEEE. He is the author of over 120 papers and has taught over 100 seminars on underground pipelines and cables to over 5,000 engineers and contractors worldwide. He is a registered professional engineer.

Advances in Underground Pipeline Design, Construction and Management is currently on sale for $170.00. To buy the book, visit For more information, contact Dr. Jeyapalan at or call 1-860-354-7299.
