Abington, PA - March 1, 2006 - Philadelphia illustrator Michele Melcher today announced the opening of her exhibit of original watercolor paintings at Joshua's, 712 West Avenue, Jenkintown, PA. Her highly creative, innovative work highlights local Philadelphia landmarks, including a series of diners and theaters, with an eclectic mix of other subject matter. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on March 11 at 7 p.m. The exhibit will be on display from March 4th through the 31st.

Nostalgia inspires Melcher to capture Philadelphia’s local favorites in watercolor. “I view the historical value of the landmarks of Philadelphia and its suburbs on a personal level,” explains Melcher. “Many people have a strong connection to these places. Although these landmarks may change ownership, structure or name, they still represent good times in people’s memories.” Joshua’s, a cafe in historic Jenkintown, is a natural environment for Melcher’s work. “It’s a wonderful place,” says Melcher. “When I learned Joshua's began showcasing local artists monthly, I jumped at the chance to exhibit my work in a community where some of those beloved landmarks still stand.”

Melcher, a classically trained illustrator, has won numerous awards for her twist on traditional watercolor. Her ability to capture exacting detail and emotion in the medium considered by many as the most difficult has won recognition and praise nationwide. Her awards include the Award of Merit for the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles -Illustration West Numbers 41 and 43, the Western Maryland Watercolor Society Award and the Peter and Iris Halmus Award for Watercolor. She has most recently shown her work at Qbix Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, Blue – A Hair Studio in Huntington Valley, PA, the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and the Saville Gallery, Cumberland, Maryland.

A master portrait artist, Melcher accepts commissioned works and inquiries for gallery shows. For further information, please go to http://mmportfolio.blogspot.com/ , call 267-974-0737, or email michelemelcher@gmail.com.
