Plastic Bags Take a Holiday:ECOBags Offers Earth Day Alternative

April 03, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Disturbed by the number of disposable plastic bags given at the grocery store, generating garbage on the streets and in her home, Sharon Feldman-Rowe decided to bring her own bags; the reusable, non-disposable kind. The fact that she couldn’t find European string market bags in 1988 was Rowe’s impetus to source and then find a consumer market for the bags in the United States.

Seventeen years ago ECOBags™ Products, Inc. was founded and has grown to be the industry leader. Rowe is a “change agent,” focused on providing quality, fair wage/trade goods for environmentally sensitive consumers and the companies who market to them. ECOBags™ offers reusable cotton string market bags and canvas bags. See www.ecobags.com

“There is an international awakening to the indisputably finite capacities of all countries to handle plastic waste,” says Rowe, a former actress turned marketing entrepreneur. Countries that have banned or taken action to significantly discourage the use of plastic bags include Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Italy, South Africa, Taiwan and Mumbai. The city of San Francisco has also proposed a tax on plastic bags.

The company’s product line is highly attractive to companies who chose to put their logos and labels on high quality organic and cotton bags. The ECOBags line has now been extended to include organic cotton towels under the ECOWeave™ label, and the company is poised to introduce an organic cotton string bag in bright colors.

Proof that ECOBags and the concept of using totes and string market bags have become more mainstream is that ECOBags was a featured brand/product on QVC TV this past summer (chosen for the Decades of Discovery Tour) and sold out faster than any other product in the show segment. ECOBags will be appearing again this May and has designs to become the eco-product category leader, setting a trend through QVC.

“I’ve read estimates that worldwide consumption of plastic bags is close to 1 trillion per year,” says Rowe. “Instead of waiting for governments to impose taxes, people around the globe are choosing to ‘live lightly on the earth™’,” says Rowe. “They find ECOBags on the Web for their personal use because it’s an easy way to make a difference.”
