New Austin Home Magazine Showcases Residence Designed by Artist Team, Artifice

Austin Monthly, Austin’s largest monthly magazine, has just launched a premier edition of their new publication, Austin Monthly Home, which showcases a mid-century modern residence with an edgy, contemporary remodel done by artist team, Jean Goehring and Amy Hovis of Artifice. The article profiles the artists’ home in Westlake, an Austin neighborhood that is not traditionally thought of as an area of Austin where one would find such an interesting remodel. The home features a surprising master bedroom conversion of their garage: Shiny white epoxy floors offset the original garage doors that open up to a bamboo lined courtyard. Goehring and Hovis did all of the design and work themselves as well as the artwork, light fixtures, much of the furnishings and landscaping. Their philosophy behind their remodel was to keep true to their home’s mid-century modern architectural elements, while updating the home with a contemporary, modernist approach.

The launch of the magazine coincides with the launch of the artists’ new website that includes photo galleries of their artwork, commercial projects and objects. “We see this website as a work in progress. It’s a way of documenting some of Jean’s past work, as well as working as a sort of sounding board to generate ideas for new projects and materials,” says Hovis. Their company, Artifice, has extensive experience creating custom projects for developers, architects, interior designers, businesses and residences. Their work ranges from the design and build-out of entire spaces (interior and exterior) façades and environments to individual objects and pieces: artwork, furniture and lighting. Previous commissions range from large, sliding steel gates and custom steel railings, to awnings, chandeliers, leather sofas, stainless steel shelving and custom bedding. Other projects include the design and remodel of an entire business or home.

The artist team’s home, featured in Austin Monthly Home Magazine, is an inspiring example of how many elements of their varied and unique projects work together in one environment. Their residence became a creative outlet for the team to experiment with new designs and materials and try out new ideas for their clients.
