CHICAGO – May 12, 2006 – With the start of summer camp right around the corner, parents of summer campers should already be making their final preparations. While parents have probably already selected the perfect camp for their kids, now is the time to make sure that children set off for camp well prepared. That means packing all the right gear to ensure a happy and safe summer camp experience.

Renowned child psychologist Dr. Christopher Thurber has 25 years experience as a camp counselor and advisor and has released a list of several helpful tips on packing for summer camp, including a few important items your kids should take as part of their "first aid" packs.

Bring the proper insect repellent – according to Dr. Thurber, “Don't pack an aerosol can. Get lotion or stick repellent instead. You don't need 100% deet repellent, unless your child’s camp is located deep in the boggy woods.”

Pack poison ivy/poison oak protection with SPF – Dr. Thurber also recommends, “to help guard against an allergic reaction to poison ivy, pack a poison ivy block or pre-contact protective lotion.” A newly available product, büji Block™, protects against poison ivy/oak by helping inhibit absorption of urushiol oil—the source of allergic reactions. It also contains an SPF 20 UVA/UVB sunscreen for added protection. For post-contact treatment of contact with poison ivy, also include büji™ Wash, a gentle, exfoliating cleanser that works anytime after symptoms appear or after exposure by washing away the urushiol oil.

Send them with plenty of lip balm – Sun, cold and dry weather can cause chapped lips, especially if children are not used to those environments. Kids should be sent with an ample supply of lip balm to fully enjoy their outdoor experience.

Finally, parents should not hesitate to contact their child’s camp with any specific first aid and other health-related questions. With proper preparation, children will be ensured a happy and healthy summer camp experience.
