Lehman, Lee and Xu goes to Toronto for INTA

Imagine a big meeting filled with trademark lawyers.

A lot of suits in one room. Not very exciting. That’s what I thought to myself when I went to interview Lucy Chang, one of the 18 lawyers from LLX that went to the International Trademark Attorney (INTA) 128th annual convention. But to my surprise, Lucy spoke of the convention as I would speak of a free shopping spree—with excitement and pleasure. She said that the experience, “really enriched every one” of the LLX lawyers that attended.

This is why: 7,000 people go to the annual INTA meetings. Between May 6th and 10th, a non-stop party went down in Toronto, Canada. And its not one big lecture-fest, either. Sure there are “skill-building workshops” but the real highlight of the event are the parties! The parties range from the “traditional” Sunday brunch held by Lehman, Lee & Xu, to discos that pound into the wee hours of the morning, to black tie formals, to salsa dancing, to… just think of thousands of lawyers finally free of their offices and let loose in a big, four-day, lawyer party!

But you know lawyers, if the disco isn’t too ear-shatteringly loud; they’ll talk business at 1 am just as readily as they will over croissants at brunch. The four-day party is an opportunity to network and get your name out. That’s why LLX hosted such a brunch on Sunday morning for well over 2,000 people. It’s expensive sure, but Lucy told me that since LLX has hosted that brunch at the annual INTA convention over the last few years, revenues have gone up at least 5 times. The thousands of members of INTA know about the firm Lehman, Lee & Xu, have had an opportunity to get to know our lawyers, and make connections. Now that’s enriching.

And an interesting side note, Edward Lehman has been involved with INTA since he was a child. His father took him to INTA meetings and he has taken his children. It really is a fun event—last year it was at San Diego and included a trip to Sea World.
