23 May 2006, San Francisco, CA – Academy of Art University, San Francisco, School of Motion Pictures & Television student, Devin Whetstone, has won a Northern California Area Emmy award for his work on a promotional campaign for San Francisco’s KRON 4. Devin was awarded, along with KRON’s Promotions Manager, Kevin Adler and designer Michiko Ino.
Awarded under the category “News Promo – Campaign,” the winning spots were based on the number 9's significance around the world. One of the spots revolves around John Lennon and his unique experiences with the number (for example, both John and his son, Sean, were born on the ninth). The significance of nine, highlighted in different ways in different spots, serves to illustrate KRON’s unique 9:00 PM newscast – the only newscast in that timeslot in the Bay Area.

Whetstone, in his second year at Academy of Art University is fresh from an internship with ATTIK, and recently created three commercials for Macbeth Shoes, a shoe company owned by Blink 182 lead singer Tom Delonge. Due to the success of these spots, Devin and his Academy partners are slated to create the debut music video for Delonge’s new band, Angels and Airwaves.
Devin’s future, while bright, can be summarized succinctly: “Right now my goal is to be able to pursue my real passion, cinematography, professionally and without the distraction of a day job and school. I'd like to make a living primarily shooting and directing music videos, commercials and, well, a few features if the opportunity arises,” explains Devin, who has two more years at the Academy before graduation.

Devin’s experience at the Academy has thus far been solid. “The Academy is all about opportunities and the work you put in. Nothing is going to happen by its self if you don't have the drive. Your education here is what you make of it. You can do all your work and pass all your classes. That's fine, but if you can make the most of it and meet people, get on sets, work hard, show up on time, eventually someone will notice. At least I hope so.”
