Talented Local Designer Fashions Original Clothing for Tykes and Uncovers Demand

Mequon, WI, – Who would have thought that original fashion design for children is in demand. But, that is what Jenny Allan is experiencing at Bark River Kids, her 6-month old shop in the historic section of Delafield. Allen’s venture has found that there is a refreshing demand for original and one-of-a-kind children’s clothing in the Milwaukee area, and lots of it.

Allan opened the shop in December of 2005 with her originals and well-established ready-made clothing lines like Tea, Wes and Willy, Appaman, GeoRage, and Jaffa (Oink Baby). Despite having such popular brands, the originals are some of the bestsellers. Pants and shirt outfits for boys and coats, 2-piece outfits and dresses for girls are part of her mix.

One of this spring’s bestsellers at Bark River Kids was a girls’ reversible coat with fabric-covered buttons (seen here.) The originals are available for boys, infant to size seven and for girls, infant to size ten.

"My inspiration comes from observing the uniqueness of individuals all around me, great fabrics and buttons and the pleasure of mixing them all together," says Allan. It all started when Allan captured an older woman in her sketch pad a few years ago. Allan hunted for fabric and trim to create a three-piece orange and cream animal print outfit. The skirt, jacket and coordinating knit vest hang near the checkout desk and are not for sale. “I just couldn’t!” say Allan.

Local media has helped get the word out about Allan and her Bark River Kids venture. M Magazine did a story on her design talents in their April issue. Allan is scheduled to appear on Fox 6 News on Friday, May 26th between 8 and 9 a.m. with children modeling her designs.
