DATELINE: NORWELL, MASS… Did you know that single fathers account for 18 percent of one-parent families in the U.S.? In 1998, there were 2.1 million single fathers, and according to the Census Bureau’s Household and Family Characteristics of 2004, the number of single dads had increased to nearly 2.3 million.

Many single dads may find it difficult to celebrate Father’s Day as, being a single parent, their schedule is already overbooked. The important thing is to make Father’s Day as special as possible for him.

According to Paul Falzone, CEO of bricks and mortar The Right One and Together Dating service as well as online dating service elove.com, “Just as no two single dads are the same, the way they prefer to spend Father’s Day will be different too. Some dads might like to read the newspaper with breakfast in bed while another dad may want to take everyone hiking. It’s important to find out what dad really wants to do and then make it happen.”

Falzone offers women who are dating single dads or who have a single dad partner, several tips for celebrating the day:

Go direct. Before you make any plans with your single dad on Father’s Day, check in with him first. As him what he really wants to do, and then do what you can to make it happen for him.

Nap time. So, your stressed-out single dad said he’d like nothing more than to lounge on the couch, watch sports and take a nap on Father’s Day. Good for him. Do what you can to give him that much needed time to himself. Arrange for a babysitter or offer to take his child(ren) out for the afternoon.

A “Dad” excursion. Dad just loves to scheme up grand plans on weekends and holidays, and Father’s Day is no exception. Whether he’d like the “whole gang” to attend a pro baseball game or go camping, fishing, golfing, deep sea diving or on some other adventure, go along. As partner to a single dad, you can make it even better by helping out with list-making and the little details such as packing the right gear!

On the other hand, if your single dad really detests having to plan things, then plan the day. Be sure to check with his children first, to gauge their interest and ensure the day is a success.

Dine out. Unless your busy single dad’s favorite past-time is cooking, make his day exceptional by cooking his favorite meal or taking him to the restaurant of his choice. Be sure to call the restaurant ahead of time to make a reservation, if possible, in order to avoid an extensive wait.

Commemorate the day. Whether his favorite thing is power tools, software and electronics, golf or good cigars, a thoughtful gift of something he truly enjoys will mark the day for your single dad sweetheart and show him how special he is. If your single dad has young children, try to get them involved in celebrating Father’s Day by encouraging them to make their own cards or gifts. Talk with his older children to find out what they have planned for their dad and ask if they need help.
