THE ORGANIC BEDDING INDUSTRY GAINS NATIONAL EXPOSURE ON CBS’S THE EARLY SHOW: TREND REPORT

As House & Garden magazine’s special projects editor, Susanna Sak, pointed out during The Early Show’s Trend Report on CBS, Organic Décor is the next up and coming trend. From organic bed linens to sustainable furniture, these green consumer goods are now set to become as mainstream as organic food and even organic clothing.

How is organic home décor gaining ground? The industry is evolving. Organic products are no longer just functional, they are stylish and fashionable. As a result, the consumer demographics are also shifting. What was once reserved primarily for individuals with chemical sensitivities is now also being embraced by consumers who want to “green” their lifestyles or those who are simply attracted to the designs.

High Desert Naturals, Inc., the organic bedding manufacturer highlighted during the Trend Report, has committed to keeping the design and the eco-friendly element as part of their company’s vision. Their Spring collection has a retro flair making organic bedding fun and functional. For Fall, HDN will be bringing on rich colors and prints with a more traditional aesthetic.

So what is organic bedding? HDN’s bedding products are currently made with 100% organic cotton. Although conventional cotton farming uses approximately 3% of the farmland worldwide, 25% of the world’s insecticides and 10% of the world’s pesticides are used to grow conventional cotton. Organic cotton is grown without the use of these harmful chemicals. In addition, HDN does not use chlorine bleach on their products, instead they opt to use hydrogen peroxide to whiten their fabrics. And, their colors and prints are developed with low-impact, fiber reactive dyes which contain no heavy metals and reduce waste water run off.

Since organic cotton has not been broken down with harsh chemicals, the resulting fabric is strong, soft and truly luxurious. “We have had customers liken our bedding to that their mother used to own when they were kids because they are so clean and fresh. In fact, one customer best described our products by saying ‘your organic cotton sheets feel like freshly washed sheets every night of the week,’” states Jennifer Calderazzo, Sales & Marketing for High Desert Naturals, Inc.

“When HDN was established, we knew that color and print had previously been lacking in the organic textile industry. We wanted to fill the void and offer the consumer a functional and stylish option. This is part of our mission and will continue to play into everything HDN does. We don’t think HDN should have to compromise our environmental standards, just as the consumer does not want to compromise their standards for quality or aesthetics,“ points out Calderazzo.

Inspired from their work in the organic apparel industry, the founders of High Desert Naturals, Inc. (HDN), designed their own line of bed sheets, duvet covers, shams, shower curtains and baby bedding made with 100% organic cotton. HDN’s design philosophy is strongly focused on color and prints, which have been largely lacking in organic home textiles. HDN offers wholesale and private label services to the organic bedding industry. For more information, log on to www.hdndesigns.com.
